Summer/Fall in Stowe
Play, Eat, and Stay with Adaptations

Green Mountain Adaptive Sports hosts a lot of events for people with disabilities in Stowe. We wanted to help you plan your trip to Stowe by sharing our favorite accessible Stowe venues you and your family will surely enjoy in summer and fall.

PLAY

Stowe Recreation Path is a gentle scenic 5.3 miles paved trail that starts on Main Street in the center of town, and goes all the way to Topnotch Resort. It links many hotels, businesses and restaurants and is perfect to walk, jog, roller blade, or bike. Visit Pinnacle Ski and Sports to rent bikes from their fleet of e-bikes, cruisers, mountain bikes in all sizes. The shop is readily accessible and is located right on the Recreation Path.

Barnes Camp Boardwalk is one of the most accessible trails in the area and starts at Barnes Camp on the Stowe side of Smuggler’s Notch. It is an accessible part of the Long Trail, and leads to wonderful views at the turn around point. Other accessible trails in Vermont can be found here.

The Swimming Hole in Stowe has trained coaches who provide adaptive aquatics lessons to our athletes. The facility has an adaptive lift to the 25 meter pool, and a spacious family changing room. The heated children’s pool is also a great option for the little ones.

Elevate is the perfect place for energetic kids to burn steam on the climbing wall, the trampolines, and the Ninja course. Our athletes love the supportive, nurturing environment here, while meeting their movement and sensory needs. Check their schedule before showing up.

Kayaking on the Waterbury ReservoirKayaking GMAS collaborates with Cathy Webster of Northeast Disabled Athletic Association to offer adaptive kayaking at the Waterbury Reservoir.  This very popular program operates early July to the end of August. Contact us early to schedule a launch.

Cady Hill Forest Trails are great for mountain bikers of all ages and abilities. Located on town land in the center of Stowe and maintained by Stowe Trail Partnership, the network offers accessible trails to mountain bikers and hikers. Don’t miss your chance to ride Florence, or “FLO”, one of the most iconic trails in Vermont.

Northeast Passage Adaptive Sadly, there is no option for adaptive bike rental in Vermont, but if you need specialized adaptive equipment, plan ahead and check out NEP.  They are located in New Hampshire, and their rentals are available for a day, a week or two, or more.

If you are interested in participating in any of these adaptive activities, please contact our partners directly well ahead of your trip to provide ample time for them to accommodate your needs.

EAT

Shakedown BBQ and Grill is located within Stowe Cider on the Mountain Road. This venue, parking and restaurant are fully accessible and provides indoors or outside seating. Catch a live music concert, eat some great grubs, sample delicious cider, including their delicious non-alcoholic option. Their attentive friendly staff is always available to accommodate all needs.

Group of adaptive athletes enjoying dinner at the Trapp Bierhall in StoweTrapp Family Lodge and Bierhall A visit to Stowe would not be complete without a stop at this iconic brewery and resort. The food and drinks are Austrian inspired, and the brewery’s restaurant offers both inside and outside seating. The large parking lot is fully accessible, complete with its convenient drop off curve. Continue on up the hill to visit the iconic Trapp Family Lodge. It may even inspire you to break into song, “The Hills Are Alive with The Sound of Music.”

Piecasso Perfectly located on the Mountain Road and just off the Recreation Path, this place is a locals’ favorite hang out. This accessible family restaurant offers food options that will appeal to everyone in your group. Delivery is also available.

Sushi Yoshi is also located on the Mountain Road next the Recreation Path. The asian inspired menu offers delicious food, and accessibility is also easy! The Hibachi bar and kid menu make this restaurant a favorite with families. Sushi Yoshi proudly hosts GMAS’ annual fundraising dinner on Giving Tuesday, generously donating proceeds of the evening to Green Mountain Adaptive Sports.

Black Cap Coffee and Bakery of Vermont. This is by far our favorite coffee shop in town. Enjoy their vast offerings of delicious coffees, and try their divine breakfast sandwiches, scrumptious desserts, home made pastries, and grilled paninis. The original Stowe location does not have a ramp, but the Waterbury, Morrisville and Burlington locations are all easily accessible.

STAY

Their Classic Accessible Queen rooms are each equipped with a plush pillow-top queen bed, and bathrooms with roll-in shower with grab bars, bench and handheld shower head, ensuring your stay is both comfortable and convenient. Located in the main building, guests will enjoy easy access to the lobby and our mercantile store.

Commodores Inn We have used this hotel for years and if you’re on a budget, you won’t find a better deal. Call them directly to discuss your needs so they can offer the perfect room, and mention GMAS to get an extra discount. The kids will love the indoor and the outdoor pool, and make sure to enjoy dinner and a drink from their in-house restaurant, Penalty Box on the hotel’s amazing patio overlooking the pond.

Goldbrook Campground Camping in Stowe can be so fun, especially at this campground. The layout is very flat, friendly to wheelchairs, and the staff so accommodating. We camp here during our Adaptive Mountain Bike weekend and cannot say enough about their accommodations, and their kind and caring team.

Thanks for visiting Stowe! We will soon also offer a Winter version of this blog. You can contact us with questions, or visit Stowe Area Association for more accommodations options.
